Introductions to Ethnomusicology
For a very long time, I am planning to assemble a list of Introductions to Ethnomusicology in German and English. The idea is to get an historiographical overview of ethnomusicology through the development in this genre.
What should count as an introduction for this purpose?
- I focus on book length publications, but will also include important encyclopedic works (articles).
- I will include both text books and other publications clearly intended for the class room as well as more scholarly publications as long as they intent to cover the whole of ethnomusicology or a similar music-related discipline.
- I will not exclude texts just because they refer to a slightly different discourse such as anthropology of music or musical folklore. This gives the list a somewhat strange and unusual look.
- What I exclude are articles that refer to the history of the discipline, even if they reflect on relatively central issues. Otherwise this would be a bibliography on the history of the discipline in general.
How should I order my bibliography? Just according to time or to languages or topics? Hmm. In doubt always purely chronologically...
N.B.: For now, the list is fairly incomplete!
