DFG Nationallizenz

I recently tried the DFG-Nationallizenz. Any person living in Germany can register an account and use many (not all) of the resources offered via DFG Nationallizenz. The registration porcess is slightly complicated. Like with ebay.de, you first need to register online, confirm this first registration online and then wait for regular mail. The latter, of course, to verify the postal address. In my case, it all worked reasonably fast.

During online registration, you can check one or more resources offered from the DFG Nationallizenzen. The selection is grouped in sinple, easy-to-understand categories: bibliographic resouces, electronic journals, fulltext databases and reference books.

I have not yet tried all of offered resources. In fact, I am overwhelmed by the complexity of the various sites. That is: the DFG Site takes you to the sites of the various digital resources - each with their own layout and search functionality. This can be, esp. at first glance, very confusing since there is no completely transparent way to find out which journal, article or file can be expected behind the names. At least, there are descriptions of the resources, but the descriptions are rather vague. Well, better like this than no access.

Anyways, I write this blog to sort out things for me. Here is a list of things that I found useful so far.

  • Central and Eastern European Online Library
  • Oxford Journals Digital Archive 1849-2008. It was the Musical Quarterly.
  • Periodicals Archive Online / PAO 1802-2000
  • Sage Journals Online Deep Backfile 1879-2007
    • Has the following journals (among others): Acta Sociologica, Anthropological Theory, Body & Society, Communication Research, Critical Sociology, Cultural Studies <=> Critical Methodologies and many MORE.

Conclusion

JSTOR is much more convenient! So far for today. Maybe more on this topic the next time I will use it.

PS: By the way, they encourage to read, print and sign legal statements. Seems to be all well-sorted out. I am sure a lot of work was put into it, but if you really read this, then it becomes less likely you really sign-up.
